Have you ever woken up in the morning and cringed at the sight of your hair, stepped out of your beauty salon and immediately reached for your hat or used the latest hair care sensation only to be disappointed?

As women we’ve all experienced turmoil with our hair at some point in our lives and were tempted to reach for that pair of scissors and just end the hair nightmare once and for all. Why on only important days does your hair decide not to cooperate? It’s almost as if your hair is punishing you for past hair care offenses.

Could it have been that bad perm in 98’? That short lived stunt with jheri curl in 02’ or was it that Mary J. Blige “I’m not going to cry” bleach blonde dye job that only made you cry moments after you stepped out of the salon, whatever it is we all can agree that sometimes is seems like our hair is our worst enemy.

As ethnic women we are all beautifully diverse and have an array of hair types to deal with, curly, wavy, kinky, straight, the list goes on, but essentially we all have the same hair care goals; we all want healthy, illustrious, manageable hair.

For the afro-diva weaves, extensions even wigs are all great quick fix remedies to hair care needs but ultimately, we all want to get cozy with our sweet hearts, have him run his fingers through our hair without hearing those impending words “what was that?” And we know what that moist island air does to natural hair, making vacations almost impossible to enjoy without those infamous micro braids, twists or the always beloved cornrows.

Can you honestly remember the last time you went swimming? It is like we have become prisoners to our own hair! This syndrome is undoubtedly attributed to our internal tendency to want what we don’t have, if you have straight hair you want curly hair, if you were born with wavy hair you’ll enter into a life long battle with hot combs, perms and hair straighteners.

This is an inevitable fact but right now the hair care industry is making great strides to accommodate ethnic hair, there are now an array of great products on the market that are sure to please the most distressed tresses.

It is clear that a dichotomy exists within ethnic woman towards their hair, some days we love our tress’ and other days we want to do no less than pull it out by the roots but one fact remains indubitable it is ours and we must embrace it for what it is.

Undoubtedly we’ve all had kinks in our hair care journey but it is essentially important to remember that the kinks and all those curls make us who we are as ethnic woman.

We all wash our hair whenever necessary. Some people prefer washing them regularly while others prefer to prolong it for whatever reason. But there’s a common misconception which may have led many people to their non-hair-washing ways: that washing too often can lead to hair loss.

Although you might be losing hair while in the shower or combing your hair, that is perfectly normal, and not related to how often you wash. Five percent of your hair is in the shedding phase, which means you can lose 80 to 100 hairs every day, regardless of when or how often you shower.

As for hair loss, much of it is caused by hormones and can be genetic. Men typically lose hair in the crown and frontal areas, while women’s hair tends to thin all over. Medication can cause hair loss as a side effect, and stress is another factor that can lead to thinning.

A big factor for hair loss that is often neglected is the use of hair shears. If you are cutting hair with cheap quality hair scissors, then your hair may get tangled and prone to hair loss when you are combing them. Therefore it is absolutely vital to use good quality hair shears.

If you are worried about losing your hair, it is very important to have it evaluated by an expert. A dermatologist will be able to diagnose the type of baldness you’re experiencing, as well as potential causes.

Regularly washing your hair will not lead to hair loss. In fact it will keep your scalp clean and moist and prevent dandruff. So make sure you are using the right products on your hair and are using good quality hair shears while cutting them. With a clean scalp and properly nourished hair, you will never have to worry about hair loss.
